Broads Authority
Life restored to Little Broad.
This secluded broad, hidden in the marsh at Burgh Common has slowly silted up, threatening its valuable aquatic animals and plants. Mudpumping by the Broads Authority has started this winter and the years of accumulated silt are being removed. The Authority has been given extra money in its National Parks Grant from the government, to restore several SSSI broads to their former glory. Little Broad may only be small, but it's conservation value is very important.
The main basin of Little Broad has silted up to only 30cms deep, which could not support water plants. A total of 8,000 cubic metres of silt will be removed to over a metre deep which will allow water plants to thrive once again. The removed mud is being spread on neighbouring farmers land, where the nutrients in the mud will help fertilise next years crop. The mudpump works through a long nozzle being pushed into the soft mud at the bottom of the broad, where it is sucked up and pumped away. To get the mudpump boat through the woodland surrounding the broad, crushed concrete was laid to make a firm path for the heavy equipment. The fill material will be removed at the end of the project to fill the holes in the track around Burgh Common making access easier for all.
For further information about this project contact Dan Hoare, Conservation Officer (Waterways) on 01603 610734, e.mail: dan.hoare@broads-authority.gov.uk

Filby in Bloom
Filby Orchards Phase One
A new initiative to achieve more permanent planting in the village is the Village Orchard scheme. The idea behind the scheme is to plant apple trees, native to Norfolk, to form an orchard which can be enjoyed by residents, to plant individual trees throughout the village and to help secure the survival of the county's surviving varieties. Initially two small areas on Pound Lane, to the rear of the bungalows, have been identified and the initial trees will be planted soon. It is hoped that individual families may be interested in planting trees within their properties, the effect in spring in a few years could be stunning. Norfolk County Council has approved a significant grant towards the cost of phase one of the project. For more information, to order trees or to offer to sponsor a tree, please contact Keith Johnson on 369536 or visit our website at: www.filby-in-bloom.org.uk/orchard.html
Local Roots Exhibition
The Britain in Bloom theme of Local Roots is being reflected in a exhibition, planned for the Open Gardens Weekend and again over the August Bank Holiday weekend. It will aim to reflect the changing face of Filby and its residents over the years. Material is already being gathered from a number of sources but if you have any photographs or documents which help to tell the story of Filby and would be prepared to share them, we would love to hear from you. Items will, of course, be handled carefully and the originals returned.
For more information, to discuss material for the exhibition please contact Keith or Lesley Johnson on 369536 or visit our website at: www.filby-in-bloom.org.uk/localroots.html
