On the memorial at the school he is shown as Charles and on the memorial at the church he is named as George (Gunner).

We have found no Charles or George Goatsons in the military records we have consulted, however there are records of Arthur Charles Goatson, born in Filby, but recording no age or next of kin.

Arthur Charles Goatson married Kate Goatson, her second marriage to a Goatson, in 1900 in Great Yarmouth. In the 1901 census the family is living on Thrigby Road, Filby: Arthur, shown as Charles, Kate, three step children and Charles Jacob their four month old son.

They went on to have three more children before Kate's death in 1907, six days after her daughter was born. Arthur married again the following year in Great Yarmouth.

Arthur enlisted at Great Yarmouth and attained the rank of Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, 60th Battalion, service number 68980. He died of wounds on the 15th May 1916 in the Persian Gulf.

Arthur is remembered as George (Gunner) on Filby church war memorial, as Charles on the school memorial and as Arthur Charles on the Kirlee 1914 - 1918 memorial in India.

Arthur was awarded the Victory, British and Star medals.

Please be aware a lot of development remains to be done and our researches are far from complete.

The information provided here is gathered from a number of sources and is, to the best of our knowledge, accurate. We cannot, of course, vouch for the accuracy of all those source and we are aware that names by which individuals were known and those recorded in official records often varied. There are also gaps in the official record as some records were lost to enemy action during the Second World War and through the passage of time.
