Filby in Bloom Quiz
Ten people achieved maximum marks on the last quiz :- Laura Orbash and Graham Edwards, Samantha Neeve, Hilary Searle, Winnie Forsdike, Andrea Carter, Jo Francis, Jane Evans, Kerri Warren, Ted Franklin and Jackie and Tom Green. A public draw in the Post Office produced Andrea Carter as the winner receiving a £10 Post Office gift voucher. Thanks to Derek Nicker for setting the quiz and everyone who entered, £60 raised for Bloom funds.
A traditional pub quiz is now running on the Post Office counter to be back by 23rd January 2011.

There is a Carol Service at Filby Church this Sunday at 10.30am, all welcome.
On Saturday a special Farm Nativity is being held at Woodlands Farm, Stokesby starting at 4.30pm prompt. Wear warm clothing, sensible footwear and bring a torch. (In the event of really bad weather this event will be cancelled - call 368210 if in doubt).
Midnight Communion takes place at Thrigby Church on Christmas Eve, starting at 11.30pm. Parking available at Thrigby Hall.

Christmas Tree Festival and Fayre
Thanks to everyone who supported this event. A special thanks to Janet Laxon for co ordinating the tree festival and Loraine Bush for donating three trees, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Great Yarmouth, Cllr and Mrs Michael Jeal, for attending. £644 was raised for Filby in Bloom and the New Hall Fund. Next year's Fayre and Tree Festival is on Sunday 11th December 2011.

This Traditional Pub Quiz is now available at the Post Office. Entry is £1 and back to the Post Office by 23rd January 2011.

Filby in Bloom
At the Anglia in Bloom seminar last Friday, we received the news that Filby will be representing East Anglia in the National finals of Britain in Bloom for 2011. This is a great honour and we will give it maximum effort as we were runners up in 2008 and 2009. Fireworks.
Thanks to every one who helped in any way to make the evening a success. The weather was very kind and we attracted the largest crowd seen at the Playing Field for many years. A special thanks to anyone who helped push the cars off at the end. A profit of

Remembrance Sunday
At 11.30am a wreath from the Great Yarmouth Branch of the FEPOW will be laid by a member of the late Stanley (Kibby) Tennant's family, a former FEPOW, at the Memorial on Filby Pound. There is then a service at the FEPOW memorial on Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth at 12.30pm.

Remembrance Sunday
A service will be held at 11am at Filby Church when a wreath will be laid by the Parish Council on behalf of the parishioners.

This year's results were a Gold Medal in Anglia in Bloom and runners up to Bulphan in Essex and a Gold Medal in Yarmouth in Bloom and the winner of the Best Kept Village.

Macmillan Coffee Morning
Thanks to everyone who helped in any way, baked a cake or attended. £320 was raised which will be shared between Macmillan and the New Hall Fund.
Clothes collection
Thanks to everyone who left items out for collection last Saturday. 36 bags were collected.
The next collection is on Saturday 30th October starting at 10am. Please leave any clothes,shoes and handbags in a plastic bag near to your gate.
In the mean time you can leave any items at the Post Office recycling bank or phone 01493 369250 for collection.
Crocus Bulb Planting
Saturday 2nd October 10am at Filby Playing Field.
This is a joint project between Filby in Bloom and the Great Yarmouth Rotary Club when thousands of purple crocus bulbs will be planted to highlight the work being done to end Polio. We would like as many people to turn up and help as we will be part of the attempt to enter the Guiness book of records for the most number of people planting bulbs on that day in the UK.

The service at Filby on Sunday will be morning prayer at 10.30am, also Morning Prayer is said at Filby Church 9am every Saturday morning.

Book Sale

Recycling
Please continue to leave all paper, glass, cans, clothes, shoes and handbags at the Post Office recycling banks. In June we collected 6.37 ton of paper and 4.17 ton of glass, bringing in £502.46 for the New Hall. Thank you to every one for doing their bit not only for the Hall but recycling in general.
Clothes Recycling
As a new initiative Filby Playing Field are trying a monthly house collection of clothes, shoes and handbags. The first pick up will be on Saturday 25th September from 10am onwards. Could any Filby household please leave any clothes in a plastic bags near their gate and these will be collected on the Saturday morning. Proceeds to the New Hall.
Christmas decorations needed
Filby in Bloom needs any unwanted Christmas decorations, also, we need Nativity figures, large or small, these can be left at Filby Post Office or call 01493 369250.
Allotments
Any Filby resident who would like an allotment at the Unitarian site on Thrigby Road please make a request in writing to David Balls, Clerk to the Parish Council, or leave at the Post Office.

August Fete Weekend
A big thank you to everyone who attended and helped in any way to make the weekend a success. The weather broke kindly for the Monday and we saw another large crowd enjoying the numerous stalls and attractions. As well as local charities and organisations benefiting from the weekend, £3332 profit was made for the Playing Field and New Hall Fund.
Filby and Runham Youth Football
The first game of the season is at home against Shrublands this Sunday 12th September, kick off 10am. Come along and support the team in their second season.
Filby in Bloom
In conjunction with the Rotary Club of Great Yarmouth are planting hundreds of purple crocus bulbs on the 2nd October outside Filby Playing Field at 10am. We would like as many people, especially children, to come and help. As well as giving some Spring colour this project is part of the End Polio Now Campaign and a local Rotarian, Mr Hugh Davies, is going to Assembly at Filby School on Monday 27th September to get the school involved and explain more about 'Purple Pinkie Power'.

On Sunday at 9am we have a car boot and table top sale, followed at 7.30pm with a 'Norfolk Night of Squit and Music', with the very funny Pat Nearney and Danny Platton.
On the Bank Holiday Monday the 56th Annual Grand Fete starts at 1.30pm, finally at 8pm we have the Grand Finale firework display and Karaoke. Gates open at 6pm with special guests the girl band Evony are live on stage, they have been on the X Factor.
There is a Beer Festival from Midday onwards on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and a local history photograph exhibition and a lot of the Filby Archive material on display in the Clubroom, each day from 10am onwards.

Alfred Nichols
The death has occurred of Mr Alfred Nichols, aged 94, of Alysham, formerly of Filby. He was the youngest son of Fredrick and Ruth Nichols ( nee Gaze ) and was the last of his generation.
He had two Brothers, George and Fred, and three sisters Ruth, Margaret and Mabel.
Alf died at home peacefully in his sleep.
He leaves a widow, Margaret, and two children Ian and Anne.
Tea Rooms and Toilets
The Tea Rooms and toilets on the Playing Field have been given a make over thanks to the efforts of John Cox and some help from the Saturday gang.
This has been completed in time for the Fete and hopefully they will see us through until the new hall is built.
Parish Council
The Council always meets in the Clubroom on the Playing Field and all meetings are open to the press and public.
It was printed incorrectly in last weeks Mercury and should have read Filby Parochial Church Council.

Open Gardens Weekend

Open Gardens Weekend
This weekend 17th/18th July 10am-4pm. Car parking and refreshments at the Playing Field. Any one able to bake a cake or savouries please leave at the playing field or phone 01493 369250. There is also a flower display and a display of photos of old and new residents in the Church. Plus a Giant Garage Sale at Laburnum Cottage opposite the Post Office. There is also a Local Roots Exhibition in the Clubroom over the weekend, displaying various aspects of the history of the village.

The service this Sunday is Holy Communion at 10.30am. everyone welcome.
On Tuesday from 10am-11.30am we welcome you to drop into Church for a coffee. It's a chance to come along for a friendly chat and refreshment
On Thursday at 3.30pm we are holding our first Messy Church and we would love to see some of our children and families come along and celebrate that.
It's a chance to use our lovely church to share time together, have some fun with the giant games and the quiet games on offer.
Be creative with the art and crafts and learn about the amazing adventures of Joseph then have our tea together.

If you once lived in Filby or you are presently living here, you can be part of the Church Exhibition to be held on the 17th/18th July.
All we need is two photos, one taken when you were young and a recent one, plus the years you lived in Filby.
