Church News

On Sunday 30^th June we are encouraging everyone to find their place in the church community by trying a new way of doing church.
You are invited to cafe church, come when you can and leave when you like. Join us for breakfast or coffee or a chat or just read a newspaper. Try our church trail to explore the beautiful building. Spend some time in our quiet prayer zone, ask for someone to pray for you. Take part in one of the acts of worship in different styles.
8.30am-9.15am Traditional said Holy Communion service.
9.30am Breakfast served, bacon rolls and croissants.
10am-10.20am Messy church style family service.
10.30am Church trail, prayer zone, someone available to pray with you, chat time, coffee and donuts.
11.30am modern language Holy Communion with hymns.

Open Gardens

Saturday 13^th and Sunday 14^th July 10am onwards.
Parking on the Playing field toilets, maps and refreshments available.
The Filby Collection is showing its collection of wedding photographs in the clubroom each day from 10am to 4pm. The collection has grown and developed since it was first displayed, in the church, 4 years ago.
The School, church and art studio all open, plus giant garage sale opposite Filby Post Office.

Judging Dates

The village is being judged on Wednesday 10^th July 10am for Anglia in Bloom, and Monday 5^th August 9.30am for Britain in Bloom.

59^th Annual Fete

Monday 26^th August 1pm on Filby Playing field. If you would like to bring a stall or attraction or ride call Adrian on 01493 369250. The day rounds off with a Grand Finale Firework display at 8pm.

Jumble Sale

Last Saturday's jumble sale, on 22^nd June at Fleggburgh Village Hall in aid of Cycling Paramedics, raised £480. Many thanks to all those who came and supported us.

Judging Dates

Anglia in Bloom are coming to Filby on Wednesday 10^th July at 10am, the Britain in Bloom judging is Monday 5^th August in the morning. We have been runner up in Britain in Bloom for the last two years, let's make it third time lucky.

Open Gardens

Saturday 13^th and Sunday 14^th July 10am onwards. Maps, car parking and refreshments on the playing field.
The school gardens are open and the school fete is on the Saturday 1pm-4pm.
The Poppins art studio is open down Thrigby Road, and the Church is open with tours and the church trail.

The school are having a fete on Saturday at 1pm, there is a display of wedding photos in the clubroom, and a giant garage sale at Laburnum cottage opposite Filby Post Office. The service this Sunday is Holy Communion at 10.30am, all welcome. On June 30^th Cafe Church will be coming to Filby. Holy Communion is 8.30am-9.15am, Messy Church style family service starts at 10am-10.20am, bacon rolls and coffee then available. Come along and take part in the Church trail or spend some time in the quiet prayer zone..Before the next service, coffee and doughnuts available then at 11.30am a modern language Holy Communion with hymns finishing at 12.30pm. Cafe church is open to all to come when they can and leave when they wish.

The service this Sunday is Holy Communion at 10.30am, all welcome.
Last Sunday was the Coronation Service, Vivien Moore spoke about her memories of the day, and read out some facts of what went on behind the scenes before the Queen was crowned. The tables were decorated in red, white and blue and people attending enjoyed a bring and share lunch. The Church was also decorated in patriotic colours and floral arrangements.

Jumble Sale

With the help of some children and parents from Filby Primary School, 65 hanging baskets were made up on Saturday morning. Despite being about 3 weeks behind in plant development, the Anglia in Bloom Judging day is Wednesday 10^th July 10am.

Open Gardens Weekend

As part of Open Gardens Weekend Saturday 13^th and Sunday 14^th July, The Filby Collection will be holding an exhibition of wedding photographs in the clubroom. It has been four years since the last wedding exhibition and many new pictures have been added. For more information call Lesley or Keith on 01493 369536.
Also on Open Gardens weekend Filby School are holding their Summer Fete and BBQ on Saturday 13^th July 1pm-4pm.

Coronation Service and Lunch

On Sunday June 2^nd 10.30am a Morning service will be held in the Church with a coronation theme to mark the Queen's coronation. After the service there will be a bring and share lunch. Lists are available in the Church for anyone wishing to attend and what food they can provide. Tea, coffee and squash will be provided, call Vivien Moore 733386 or Sue Smith 369291 for more details.

Plant Sale

Last week's sale raised £478, which was the best sum raised in its 21 year history. Money raised is for Church funds and greatly appreciated as was the support given by people attending and donating items.

A one day sewing workshop for beginners on Monday 3^rd June. You can fit in anytime between 10am-4pm for £2.50. Please book in for a slot time with Pat Bell on 368262. Please bring your own materials and sewing machine. If you have no ongoing project we will be making bags or cushion covers or patchwork.

This Sunday is Rogation Sunday and the Archdeacon of Norfolk, the Ven Stephen Betts, will take Holy Communion at 9am. At 10.15am meet at the Church for a tractor/trailer ride not only blessing the crops but focus on enterprise in the countryside visiting Croft Farm, Thrigby Wildlife Park and Buttonwick Bakery.

Concert

Local group Stoneangel recently performed at Filby Church, a variety of folk songs and music were played, including a song by Shinny Crowe who wrote songs at the turn of the last century. The Parochial Church Council handed over a cheque for £700 to the New Village Hall Fund.

Plant Sale

Saturday 18^th May in the Church 10am-12. Good selection of herbaceous and bedding plants. Draw and refreshments available, all proceeds to Church Funds.

In Bloom

Working during the week as well as Saturday, we are catching up with pricking out the bedding and basket plants. The wild flowers are growing well and we would encourage anyone to grow edible flowers and vegetables as part of our "Filby feeds itself" campaign.

No service at Filby this week, but at 9am at Fleggburgh there is the Blessing of the Palms, followed by a walk across Fleggburgh Common to Stokesby Church, where there will be a Palm Sunday Holy Communion at 10.30am.

Easter Bonanza

This Saturday at 10am-1pm in the Clubroom. Basket Raffle with a prize every time, tombola, refreshments, proceeds to the New Hall Fund.

Concert

This Saturday in the Church at 7.30pm. Local group Stone Angel will be performing. Tickets £8.50 including a light Buffet and a glass of wine or fruit juice. Proceeds to the New Hall Fund.

Playing Field AGM

This was held on Monday 18^th March in the Clubroom. David Thompson was re elected Chairman, Joy Baldry Secretary/ treasurer and Adrian Thompson Vice Chairman. The Playing Field fund at the moment stands at £130,850, mainly invested in Bonds ready for the New Hall, when sufficient money is raised. The hire rates for all clubs using the Hall and field will remain the same for the forthcoming year. The fete this year is on Monday 26^th August and we would like to see as many outside stalls and organisations present, helping make this a great afternoon. The day will be rounded off with a bonfire and firework display.

Filby in Bloom

A new venture this year is the creation of wild flower areas. Derek Nicker has researched the idea and we have purchased enough seed to cover 130 square metres. As the weather is a bit unpredictable at the moment, we are growing the seeds in trays, and will roll them like turf, when the time is right.

Clothes Collection

A new hedge was planted on Saturday morning along the Main Road near Poplar Drive. The hedge consists of Rowan, Hawthorn, Cherry, Dog Rose and Birch. The plants were from the Woodlands Trust and are to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Bird boxes

Thanks to Percy Hudson, who made the boxes and Les Futter and Ken Saul who placed the boxes around the village. These will now be monitored for activity, not only helping our wildlife but a good news story for our Britain in Bloom entry.

Britain in Bloom Seminar

Thanks to Caroline and Derek Nicker for attending the Britain in Bloom Seminar last week. A Filby in Bloom meeting will shortly be called to plan in detail for 2013. There seems at the moment to be an emphasis on wildflower areas and grow your own.

Defibrillator Training

In the event of an emergency after dialling 999 the defibrillator is available 24/7 at Filby Post Office. Members of the Post Office staff, playing field committee and bowls club are taking basic training on CPR and the use of the machine on Saturday 9^th February in the Clubroom.

The last Bingo raised £75 for Hall Funds. Thanks to Paddy Hudson for co-ordinating the prizes and everyone who attended. The next Bingo is Friday 8^th February 7.30pm in the Clubroom.

In Bloom Christmas Quiz

Two people scored a maximum of 100%: Fay Kyriacou and Jane Evans. Five people scored 99%: Mrs McDonald, Samantha Neeve, Lesley Thain, Winnie Forsdike and Mrs P Green. and one person scoring 98%: Laura Orbash. Thanks to everyone who supported the Quiz and Derek Nicker for setting the questions. £80 raised for in bloom funds.

Bird Boxes

As part of our 2013 entry Percy Hudson has made a number of bird boxes. These are going to be put up and monitored through the village by Kenny Saul and Les Futter. In addition to this the Broads Authority will be erecting and monitoring Barn Owl and Kestrel Boxes.

Filby School

Filby school are looking for a community governor. If you are interested call the Head Teacher on 369241 or Chair of Governors: Graham Steel on 368210.

Local group Stone Angel will be appearing in the Church on March 23^rd at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8.50 including a glass of wine and a light buffet. Tickets available from PCC members, Filby Post Office or on the door. Proceeds to the New Hall Fund on the Playing Field.

Church News

The service this Sunday is Holy Communion at 10.30am. At 3pm there is a Plough Sunday service at 3pm at Winsford Hall Farm Stokesby.

Bingo.

Please continue to leave Christmas cards in the sack at the entrance to the Post Office. Also papers, cans, glass, clothes, shoes and handbags in the recycling banks.
