The Great War Centenary 1914/18--2014/18
To commemorate the start of the 1st World War, we would like to remember the residents of Filby who took part in this conflict and also the 2nd World War. If you have any information, memorabilia, photographs etc we would be very interested to hear from you. The collection will be kept for future generations. New Hall
The playing Field Committee are pleased to announce that they have passed stage 2 of the Lottery Application for the New Hall and are now working on stage 3.
Stars and Candles Festival
The church was decorated in gold and silver stars and candles placed in flower displays and decorations of holly and ivy. Displays were arranged by the nursery, school and craft club. Much appreciated was the help given, donations and those people who visited. £920 was raised for Church Funds.

We had the great news last Wednesday that we are back in the Britain in Bloom Finals for 2014. This will be the fourth year running, and after being runners up for the last three years work has already started to win in 2014. A meeting has been arranged with Pentland plants for the morning of Wednesday 27th November and a Filby in Bloom meeting has been called for Monday 2nd December 7pm in the Clubroom. Both meetings open to everyone.

Firework Display
Last Sunday's Firework display raised £2126 for the New Hall Fund. Filby in Bloom
All the baskets were taken down at the weekend and stored away for 2014. Begonia corms and fushias were saved and potted up to over winter. Christmas baskets are now being prepared and we would like to encourage people to decorate up this year with lights to compliment the village displays. Filby in Bloom
On Saturday in Cleethorpes Filby picked up a Gold Medal in Britain in Bloom and came runners up in our village group. This is the third year running we have been runners up but it has been a good year with Gold Medals in Yarmouth in Bloom and Anglia in Bloom.

The June sale raised money for the Cycle response unit and a letter from Darren Rutherford has confirmed the money raised has been put towards a light weight defibrillator.
Church News
The quiz held in the Church last Friday raised £325 for communities in Brazil. The winning team, on 119 points, was Run and Hess who received a bottle of wine each. The people of the Quilombola region face many threats from mining, logging and fishing companies and it is hoped the money raised will be sent to support the people's land rights. The Morning Prayer service on Sunday was led by the Worship group, a film was show about the Quilombola project in Brazil and the collection of £62 was donated to this cause, giving a total of £387 being donated to the Quilombola project in Brazil. The next Church service on Sunday is Holy Communion at 10.30am.

The concert last Saturday raised £100 for Church funds. The concert was also the first opportunity to switch on the newly installed lights on the Church car park and the path leading to the Church.
The Benefice lunch last month was at Fairhaven Tea Rooms followed by a trip on South Walsham Inner Broad.
The next lunch is at Stokesby Social Club on Thursday 24th October at 12 noon.
Jumble Sale
A Cheque for £385 was presented by Sue Smith, Sue Cox and Lesley Johnson to John and Toni at their Hemsby home for Foxy Lodge Wildlife Rescue. John then gave the three ladies a guided tour of the various species being treated, including foxes and hedgehogs.
The next sale is November 9th at Fleggburgh Village Hall at 2pm for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

In Bloom
The village pond has now been cleared and the pipe draining of the Main Road located and cleared. Two new seats have been purchased via the Parish Council with money allocated by our local Borough Councillor David Thompson. They have been positioned on the Pound replacing the old bench in memory of Elsworth Filby, and at the Community Orchard. Britain in Bloom results are on 12th October at Cleethorpes.

Filby Bowls Club held their end of season social night at the Fox and Hounds on Friday night. Presentations were made to the following: The Basil Secker Cup was won by Linda Jenkins and Norman Ellis, The Henry Hunn Cup was won by Tom Courteney, the Kibby Tennant Trophy won by John Baldry, the Ruth Elderkin Cup was won by Steve Elderkin and the Terry Payne Memorial Cup was won by Ted Franklin. Members enjoyed a fun quiz and a fine buffet kindly prepared by the Fox and Hounds. Thanks to all who attended and John Baldry for arranging the evening.

Filby In Bloom
On Friday Filby won the Best Kept Village in the Borough of Great Yarmouth with a Gold. The Post Office won Best Commercial premises with a Gold, and the Allotments also received a Gold Medal. In Anglia in Bloom Filby won the Best Village with a Gold . All eyes are now on October 12th when the Britain in Bloom results are announced. In the mean time we carry on maintaining the displays and other environmental improvements.

Bonfire and Firework Display
Sunday 3rd November 5pm Filby Playing Field. Make a note in your diary for this great value family evening. Rides, hot food and refreshments and free car parking.
Filby in Bloom
Work started on Saturday clearing the fallen tree out of the village pond. Over the next few weeks other debris will be cleared and wildlife habitats created. If you would like to get involved with any aspect of our Bloom Campaign call in the Post Office or call Adrian on 01493 369250.

August Fete
The 59th Annual Fete is on Monday 26th August at 1.30pm on Filby Playing Field. Rob Chandler of Heart Radio will be live on stage. Razz the clown is giving a free childrens show. There is a Dog Display, archery and many more stalls and attractions.
At 8pm we have the finale firework display, music with Hank Bemarvin, hot food and a Bar run by the Norfolk Broads Lions. To book a stall or further information call Adrian on 01493 369250.
Cakes and Savouries Needed
Pat Bell is hoping you will bake for the Fete Cake stall. I need your support as usual for this to happen successfully. Please leave any cakes etc in the Tea Rooms on the morning of 26th August, or at Filby Post Office.

The Filby Collection
Our next display will open tomorrow in the clubroom for the August Bank Holiday Weekend that is Saturday, Sunday and Monday 24th, 25th and 26th August from 10am-4pm. It will feature our growing collection of photos of Filby weddings and Filby Folk as well as the 1841, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census records of Filby and Thrigby and other records from the collection.
Anglia in Bloom Awards Ceremony
The Award Ceremony this year is on Tuesday 10th September at St Albans, 10.30am-3pm. Anyone interested in going please contact Adrian on 01493 369250.
Church News
There is no service at Filby this weekend, but there is a Benefice Cafe Church at Runham starting at 8.30am, incorporating Holy Communion, Holiday Club Celebration Service, activities, discussion plus bacon butties, croissants, donuts, coffee etc. Come when you can, leave when you like, all welcome.
Quizaid
Friday October 4th 7.15pm in Filby Church The cost is £5 per head and there needs to be 6 people in a team. A light Buffet is provided, but bring your own drink. This event is raising funds for the Christian Aid Harvest Appeal, for the QUILOM BOLA community in Brazil, to preserve the rain forest and the Brazil nut harvest on which they depend. Both Anglia in Bloom and Britain in Bloom judging went very well. Please continue to dead head and weed and maintain the standard as we will have many visitors passing through in August and September.

The service this Sunday is Holy Communion at 10.30am, all welcome.
On Sunday 18th August, at 10.30am, there will be a special service to celebrate the music of, and to dedicate the new headstone to, Humphrey Walpole who was the Church Organist and Choir Master for over 50 years.
Humphrey died in 1953 and, after fund raising last year, a head stone was purchased which is now in place on his grave.
The service will consist of music old and new to reflect his love of a wide range of music.
Refreshments will be served after the dedication and every one is welcome to attend, especially from the village. Several of Humphrey's relatives from away will be attending.

Open Gardens Weekend
Both days were busy and good weather certainly helped. It was good to see all the village organisations working together. The school fete was well attended and Open Gardens raised £1527 to be shared equally with the Church, the New Hall and «in Bloom». Thanks to everyone who opened their gardens and helped in any way.

This Saturday and Sunday 13th/14th July 10am-4pm. Parking on Filby Playing Field where maps, teas and toilets available.
In the Clubroom the Filby Collection is showing its collection of wedding photos, the collection has grown since it was first displayed 4 years ago in the church, contact Keith or Lesley on 01493 369536.
In the Church lunches are available and a tombola. On Sunday, at 4.30pm, a celebration service will take place.
There is also a giant garage sale at Laburnum Cottage opposite Filby Post Office.
The school is also open with a Fete on Saturday at 1pm.
