Filby in Bloom
Free Year Planners will be available from 22nd December.
In 2015 Filby is representing East Anglia in the Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions category. There are only six entries, from all over the UK, in this category. Donations to Filby in Bloom would be much appreciated in this special year.
Recycling

New Hall
A progress meeting was held on 11th December on site. Everything is going to plan, foundations have been excavated and 170 cubic metres of concrete poured. We are still on schedule for completion at the end of May 2015. Any donations towards this project would be much appreciated as it will benefit the area for years to come.

Festival of Bells
Will be celebrated in the Church this Saturday and Sunday 10am-3.30pm. Home made soup and lunches are available from 11.30am. Preserves, chutneys, homemade cakes and a large tombola. On Saturday at 7.30pm there is a concert with Annette Jude on Keyboard and Suzie Turner vocalist, tickets £8.50 including a glass of wine and buffet.

A Festival of Bells will be celebrated in the Church over the weekend 13th/14th December 10am-3.30pm. Soup and lunches served from 11.30am-3pm, cakes, tombola and preserves also available.
A carol service will be held on Sunday at 3.30pm.
On Saturday13th December 7.30pm there is a concert with Annette Jude on keyboard and Susie Turner vocalist. Tickets £8.50 including a glass of wine and Buffet.
Advent Windows
Every weekday evening during Advent a window will be lit up somewhere in the Benefice at 6pm.On 11th December the Advent window will be at Lintoft Lodge, the home of Geoff and Pam Pritchett, all welcome. On December 18th the next advent window is at Acorn Lodge, Thrigby Road, the home of David and Sally Shaw.

Work continues on schedule and on Tuesday 18th November at 12.30pm the ceremony of cutting the first sod of turf was carried out by the Playing Field Chairman: Cllr David Thompson MBE. Light refreshments were provided and all the committee could see, first hand, the progress made.

Remembrance Sunday
A wreath will be laid at the FEPOW memorial on the Pound at 10am. At 10.55am, at the war memorial in the Church, an act of remembrance will take place, followed by Morning Prayer in the Church. At 12.30 a service will take place at the FEPOW Memorial Clock on Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth.

On Friday 24th November at the Town Hall, Filby won the Best Village in the Borough with a Gold Medal. The Post Office was also recognised with a Gold and the allotments a Silver Gilt. This rounds of a good year for Filby and work now starts for 2015.

Church News
There is no service at Filby this Sunday, but there is Holy Communion at Fleggburgh at 10.30am. On Saturday at 7.30pm there is a concert by Anglia Consort, playing 16th to 21st century music. This is a farewell concert to their musical director: Ron Skins. Tickets are £8 including a buffet and glass of wine.
Jumble Sale
Last week's jumble sale raised £623 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal, which was the best sum raised in almost 30 years of sales. Much appreciated were all the donations, the support of people attending, the dedicated team of volunteers and not forgetting our man with a van. The next sale in March.
Fireworks
The annual Bonfire and Firework Display is Sunday 2nd November on Filby Playing Field. Gates open at 5pm, the Bonfire is lit at 6pm followed by fireworks. Hot food and soup, bar, refreshments and Childrens' rides. Adults £4 children £2, push chairs free and free car parking.
Filbys New Village Hall
The Playing field committee are pleased to announce that we have been successful with our lottery bid, and the building of the new hall will start on November 10th 2014. Thanks must go to Derek Nicker and Peter Chapman who have coordinated our application. Thanks also to all the committee and every one who has contributed in any way to make this a successful bid.
Britain in Bloom
Last Thursday in Bristol, Filby won an RHS Gold medal and been nominated for the Champions of Champions for 2015. We meet every Saturday morning at 9am at the farm opposite the Post Office. This Saturday we will be preparing the Bonfire and taking down some of the hanging baskets.

Those people who attended last weeks Harvest Festival admired the arrangements of flowers, fruit and vegetables displayed in the Church. Arranged around the Font were donations of tinned groceries from children at the school and parishioners. After the service lunch was enjoyed and £150 was raised and given to the Smile Train, a charity treating cleft lip and palate in 85 developing countries. The food donations from Filby and Fleggburgh Church were taken, on Monday, to the Salvation Army in Great Yarmouth.

Filby Remembers
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1 there will be a display of photographs, memorabilia and information in the Clubroom, Main Road, Filby from Saturday 23rd August for three days from 10am-4pm each day. As well as Filby, the Parishes of Caister, Runham, Mautby and Thrigby are also included, remembering those men and women who have served, and those still serving, their country.
Broads Music Festival

Open Gardens Weekend
A great weekend enjoyed by many people. £1350 was raised with the Church, New Hall and Filby in Bloom each receiving £450. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way, the people who opened their gardens and every one who attended.

Church News
There is no service at Filby this Sunday morning, but there is a joint Holy Communion at Fleggburgh at 10.30am.
A celebratory meal was enjoyed at Filby Bridge Restaurant for the guest of honour Margaret Crouch and her family. She has retired after playing the organ at Filby for 43 years. Over 50 people attended and Margaret was presented with 2 large books of the sheet music of Beethoven, a planter and an orchid and flowers donated by parishioners. After the meal a retirement cake was enjoyed.
Concert
Great Yarmouth Brass Band performed at Filby Church last Saturday, playing a variety of music from marches to musicals, with music to match the weather, singing in the rain was not lost on the audience. The musicians and Colin, the conductor, were given tremendous applause. Much appreciated were draw prizes anyone who helped in any way. £301 was raised for Church funds.
Open Gardens Weekend
This Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July 10am-4pm. Car Parking, Maps, toilets and refreshments at Filby Playing Field. A number of gardens are open and well as garage sales at Laburnum Cottage and Hollydene near the Post Office. The Sailing Base is open, along with the orchard and Thrigby Mill. A display of photos and memorabilia is on display in the Clubroom commemorating local people who served from World War 1 to the present. Plants will be on sale at the Playing Field and 6 Filby Close. Contact Adrian on 01493 369250 for further details.
The Church is open for lunches, soup and refreshments. Church archives from 1561 will be on display. A folder documenting those men from the village who died during World War 1 will be on view, and a tombola. At 4pm on Sunday a celebration service of Filby in Bloom will be held in the Church.

Organist Margaret Crouch retired last Sunday after 43 years service. Marion Filby led the tributes and presented her with two orchid plants from the Filby Association. Margaret recalled one of her first services was for the Filby Association. She felt nervous but enjoyed the service and never looked back. Afternoon tea was then enjoyed.
Marie Curie Blooming Great Tea Party
Thank you to every one who supported and came to this event at the Clubroom £307.30 was raised.
Coffee Morning
The next Coffee morning is Thursday 10th July 10am-12, real coffee sponsored by the Tea Junction in Norwich. Proceeds to Filby in Bloom and the New Hall Fund.
Brass Band Concert
Great Yarmouth Brass Band are holding a Summer Concert on July 5th in the Church at 7.30pm.Tickets £8.50 including a glass of wine or fruit juice and buffet. Tickets on the door or call Sue Smith on 01493 369291.
Open Gardens / Garage Sale Weekend
Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July 10am-4pm. Car Parking, refreshments, toilets and maps available at the Playing Field. Numerous Gardens and garages open, a chance to see behind the scenes of this award winning village. A display of photos and memorabilia commemorating World War 1 and since in the Clubroom. Filby Association
Members met on Sunday at 11am for their AGM in the Church. This was followed by a dedication of a seat on the Pound by the vicar to the late Mary Filby, who did much, along with her late husband, to further the aims of the Association. A Church service followed at 2.30pm.
Jumble Sale
The most recent Jumble Sale at Fleggburgh raised £550 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Much appreciated were the items donated to sell and the donations of cash. Trish, who has been a supporter at the jumble sale for 10 years, was thanked for her help and commitment and good wishes sent for her move in her new home.
