Born: September 1887 in Filby, the eldest son of Robert and Anna Maria Bessey, daughter of Charles Crowe.
In the 1891 census Charles, recorded as George, is living in a cottage in Thrigby. His father Robert's occupation is given as a fisherman. Robert died on 5th November 1891 aged 27 years. By 1901 Charles is a "cattle boy on the farm", living with his widowed mother and two younger brothers.
On 24th June 1915 Charles married Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Jacob. Their son, George William, was born on 24th October 1915. Charles' occupation is given as a fisherman.
Charles was an engineer on H.M. Trawler Anworth and was killed on 10th December 1916 when the boat he was on capsized. He was 29 years old.
Charles is remembered at the school and on the war memorial at All Saints Church, under the first name of George. Charles is also remembered separately in Filby churchyard. (W.I. 1980/81 survey, plot 211)
In loving memory of Charles George, the beloved husband of Elizabeth Bessey, who was drowned through capsizing of a boat at Palling December 10th 1916 age 29 years.
